Welcome to the Ticket to Ride: Portugal Edition website!
This is an unofficial edition that i made for myself since i really wanted to play in a board of my own country. When the work was finished, i thought that the result was pretty ok, so i thought to share it with all Ticket to Ride fans. So i hope you like it and have some good times with it!
This edition is meant to be played with most of the Ticket to Ride: Märklin components, since it follows the same guidelines and board layout (cities of different colours for Merchandise Tokens, Destination Ticket Cards divided into Short and Long destinations, etc). But i'm sure it's possible to play it with any of the previous editions like Europe or USA, you just have to adapt to their rules.
You can find all the components for the Portugal Editon
right below, just print them and play! After that let me
know what do you think of it - thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or even a thank you
would be nice! For that send an email to

The Portuguese Board:
Here's the main board in 2 flavours: Light and
Advanced. Just click on any of them for the full size file (3,5 Mb):
|
Light version - recommended for 2-3 players. Few double routes make it difficult to reach some areas if you play it with 4-5 players (which can be nice if you like cut-throat games). My first test was on this version with 5 players and although it was impossible to make some routes after mid-game, it was a good and highly competitive game, providing a different experience from other Ticket to Ride versions. Optional version for A4 printing can be downloaded here (3,5 Mb .zip file) |
Advanced version - recommended for 4-5 players. After testing the light version I decided to make this one with more double routes so it would still be possible to complete most of the routes after mid-game. This version is specially good for those who don't like others to block your way!
Optional version for A4 printing can be downloaded here (3,5 Mb .zip file) |
The Destination Ticket Cards:
Here are the cards you will need to play this edition, just click on the image to get the full sized file and print them out. You have to group the correct fronts and backs to get the Short and Long Destination Ticket cards, unless you use the optional front version that will make all the cards look alike.
If you prefer you can grab here all the images in one single .zip file (4,73 Mb).
| Front of Short Destination Ticket cards (worth 5 to 11 points) with lighter sky. | Back of Short Destination Ticket cards (worth 5 to 11 points). The third sheet includes 5 blank cards you can use to make your own destinations. |
| Front of Long Destination Ticket cards (worth 12 to 20 points) with darker sky. | Back of Long Destination Ticket cards (worth 12 to 20 points). The third sheet includes 5 blank cards you can use to make your own destinations. |
|
Optional front version for having all the Destination Ticket cards look alike, instead of having Short and Long ones. |
Instructions:
Print the board version of your choosing (Light or Advanced) either with a plotter (for the full size image) or with a A4 printer (for the splitted image).
Buy a 2mm thick carton board with equal or bigger dimensions than 74x52 cm. If it's bigger then cut it to that size with a x-acto.
Hint for gamers in the Lisbon area: you can plot the image cheaply for 9,55 € in LTI CivMat (IST) - be sure to choose the Coated 130gr paper for the best results with low price.
Now you have to make a choice. You can just glue the full sized image into the 74x52 carton board (and you're done) or you can make some cuts to make a foldable board (and thus taking far less space when you're not playing it). If you choose the second option then continue reading this subchapter.
Cut the 74x52cm carton board into 4 equal pieces, so for that, divide each dimension by 2 and mark those lines on one face of the carton. Now cut those 4 pieces with a x-acto.
To make a foldable board just put those 4 pieces in the original positions like before you cutted them so they perfectly fit with each other (step 1 of the diagram below) and use some wide scotch tape - 5 cm will do nicely - to connect the 2 pieces on the left and the 2 pieces on the right (step 2). After that turn the board to the other side (this will be the back side) and connect the left and right parts only in the upper half of the board (step 3).

You may consider to reinforce the areas near the edges (marked A in the diagram above) with normal transparent scotch tape (if not, you will see later after opening and closing the board sometimes, why you should do this).
Now we have to prepare the image to put it on the board. Like before mark 2 lines in the back of the image that divide it into 4 equal pieces and cut them with x-acto or scissors. After that glue those pieces into the board (the best option is using spray glue to avoid bubbles of air between the image and the carton - but be careful with the vapors so do it in a open space with air circulation).
Just put all the sections together and glue them to the board. You can try to make a foldable board like explained in 1.1. but i think it won't be so easy like if you had a full sized plotted image.
Print the front sheets (3 Short Destination Tickets front sheets + 3 Long Destination Tickets front sheets or 6 Optional version front sheets) in A4 glossy paper (160gr will do nicely) and also print the back sheets in A4 common paper (like 90gr).
Now cut all the sheets around the big area of 9 cards (not each one!) and after that put the correspondent fronts and backs together and glue them (again spray glue for best results). Let it dry and now cut them into the individual cards. It's done! You can play now!
Put the Merchandise Tokens in the cities of the Portuguese map just like in the Marklin board, but since there are 3 more cities in this map, you have to leave 3 white cities of your choosing without the correspondent white Merchandise Tokens (the 2 point ones).
Separate the deck of Destination Tickets (from Portugal Edition of course) into one stack of Short routes and a second stack of Long routes, after shuffling them.
All the rest of the Marklin components and rules still apply.
Since these versions don't have Merchandise Tokens you cannot use this feature with this board. So just try to use the rules of these versions as possible and adapt wherever needed. You can use the Short and Long Destination Ticket cards instead or you can assemble all the cards to look alike if you prefer, using the optional front version supplied above.
